Abstract

Overall, RFID technology can help hospitals enhance efficiency, improve patient safety and reduce costs. Though many hospitals are using active RFID tags for inventory tracking and management, theft deterrence falls short of using reader gates and alarms to alert hospital security when RFID tagged items leave the building. Valuable equipment simply exits without notification. Retailers effectively deploy disposable and cost-effective passive RFID tags as well as reader gates with alarms to deter theft of items. Will hospitals soon follow?
