Abstract

Displaced workers experience career discontinuity, distrust organizations, and lose pride in mastering a craft and professional identity—all of which are more likely as artificial intelligence (AI) automates a wide range of professions that once were the domains of human expertise. But a sustainable future depends on not just innovation, but also maintaining a sense of mutual dependence and human significance. As AI acquires many instrumental skills—those that enable getting the job done—other threats and shortcomings come into focus.
